Well, how was it for you this year? Did you achieve all your 2017 golfing goals? Handicap reduction, captains prize, national title? If not, why not?

I’ve personally played the least golf this year since I first started on this crazy journey way back in 1988 and for very good reason, I’ve been too busy helping everybody else achieve their goals! Plenty of early mornings and late evenings have seen the Getgolfing.ie stable showcase their talents at club, county, provincial, national and international levels. Trophies aplenty, including –
17 club competition wins
Kerry Boys championship
Kerry Girls championships
Kerry Boys league
Munster Fred Daly Plate
Munster Ladies Senior cup
Munster Ladies Senior Foursomes
Leinster Ladies Championship
All Ireland Mens Junior Cup
All Ireland Ladies Senior Cup
All Ireland Ladies Senior Foursomes
Irish Girls Champion
Ladies Home Internationals
2 Hole in ones and a 2 year scholarship to the US
But after all that, the coaching achievement that I am most proud of this year comes from a new and hopefully one time student, JC from Tralee. JC is not a golfer at all, but quite an accomplished Pitch & Putt player –

”Hi Mark, just to let you know that I can’t thank you enough for our last lesson. It’s been 3 months and I haven’t shanked a wedge since. I’m in the match play final and a lot more confident, thanks”.

So if you have any unfulfilled golfing goals look to improve one area of your game that will make a difference or give me a call to discuss starting on a long term improvement plan, Spring 2018 is only just around the corner!

Mairead Martin continued her on her rich vein of form by claiming the Leinster Ladies Championship at Donabate on Sunday. Plus 2 handicapper Martin who represents Kanturk GC is also a member of Killarney and Ballybunion Golf clubs won her second national event in less than a fortnight following on from her Irish Girls Championship victory at Mallow GC.

After qualifying in joint 4th place with rounds of 76 & 77 in tricky conditions it was on to the first of 4 head to head matches dispatching Nicole McGavisk (Donabate) 6&4. The afternoon saw a comfortable quarter final 5&4 win over Clodagh Walsh (Castlewarden). A Sunday morning semi final against Irish International Meadhbh Doyle (Portarlington) proved to be a slightly tougher affair with Martin eventually prevailing 2&1. The final was always going to be a test of stamina and with Rachel McDonnell (Elm Park) making 2 birdies and Martin unable to convert a number of birdie opportunities Martin found herself in the unfamiliar position of being 3 down after 9 holes. Back to back birdies on the 10th and 11th turned the momentum Martins way eventually running out a 2&1 victor.

After starting 2017 outside the top 800 this win takes Martin to just outside the top 300 in the womens world amateur rankings where she is the 7th ranked Irish Female player behind world number 1 Leona Maguire ( Cavan). When not competing Martin works on her game at Swing Studio Killarney with her Kerry based coach Mark Heinemann who is the ILGU regional coach for the south west and ILGU High Performance squad support coach. Martin now faces a very busy August with the ladies home internationals up next from 9th – 11th at Little Aston GC. This is followed up by the British Girls Championship 15th – 19th August at Enville GC and then its on to Royal Curragh for the Irish senior cup representing Killarney on the 2th & 26th.

Too many golfers want to get fitted for new clubs because thats what the salesman or club pro told them to do, or because of some sense that nobody buys “off the rack” anymore. For some, fitted clubs will be money well spent, but others would be better off investing in some lessons first.

Getting Fitted

The club-fitting process involves both static and dynamic measurements of your golf swing. The goal is to determine what loft, lie angle, shaft flex, head design, length and grips your clubs will need to best suit your game. After the measurements, you will be asked to hit a few shots and maybe try a few irons with different lofts and lies. There will be questions about your playing ability, ball flight, where your miss-hits tend to be and your goals. The club-fitter will offer an opinion about what would be best for you.

You Should Not Be Fitted

The question of whether you should be fitted leads to another: Can you repeat your swing? If the answer is “no,” being fitted for clubs should not be your first priority. Its not about how your swing feels; its about the results. If you consistently hook, slice, pop up or roll your shots, chances are you have a swing that at least reasonably repeats. If you consistently hit shots in different flight patterns–one left, the next right and not on purpose–you probably have trouble repeating your swing. You cant fit a club around your swing if you cant repeat it consistently. You will end up trying to fit your swing around the club. Before spending money in custom-fit golf clubs, invest in lessons from a PGA professional.

You Should Be Fitted

If you can repeat your swing, then you absolutely can benefit from being fitted. If you strike the ball too close to the heel or toe of the club, or the sole bottoms out on the heel or toe, your clubs might be too long or short for you. The fitting process will reveal these problems, and you can have the clubs adjusted so your natural swing will regularly strike the ball on the sweet spot. Having clubs that properly fit your swing can help correct a flaw or poor ball flight without changing your swing. Playing with the right clubs will have an immediate and profound impact on your scoring ability.

Considerations

Once you have committed to getting custom fitted, consider whether youre feeling good, pressed for time, feeling pressured or swinging poorly. Dont allow any of these factors to interfere. If you are tired, sore or not warmed up, you will not swing the same as you normally would. Dont come straight from work or when you only have a little time, then grab a club and start swinging. Schedule the fitting when you have sufficient time to stretch, warm up and patiently go through the process. Even if you are feeling good, make sure you are hitting the ball like you normally do. You dont want to get fitted on a fluke day of good or bad ball-striking. Usually, the cost of the fitting is subtracted from the cost of the clubs if you buy them. If you dont like any of the clubs you try, then dont buy anything. You will likely have to pay a moderate fee for the fitting, but the results are yours to keep.

Other Fittings

Do not forget to get a putter fitted as well–this is the club you use more than any other but the one golfers have fitted least often. You can also be fitted with your current putter and have it adjusted. Golf ball fitting is also available. The amount of choices you see when browsing the golf ball aisles can be overwhelming. Being fitted for a ball will narrow your choices based on your swing speed, spin rate, and ball flight.

Custom fitting by Callaway is available at Swing Studio Killarney.

From the days when selecting a club was done by “eye”, there has been a progression of aids available to player to help gauge distance. Initially, there was the introduction of course yardage charts (a development often attributed to Jack Nicklaus), distance markers at the sides of fairways and distances on sprinkler heads. More recently, we have reached a point where it has become quite common for Committees in certain areas of the world to put a Local Rule in place to permit competitors in their events to use electronic distance-measuring devices.

Where such a Local Rule is in place, competitors must ensure that the Device they are using complies with the restrictions of this Local Rule and that they do not access other information which would cause them to be in breach of the Rules. For further information on the issues relating to distance measuring devices, please see the information below.

Did you know?
For distance measuring devices to be permitted during a competition, the Committee must put a Local Rule in place allowing their use.Rule 14-3 does not permit the use of any artificial device or unusual equipment for the purpose of gauging or measuring distance.However, a local rule may allow the use of a distance-measuring device during a round of golf, to measure distance and distance alone.

The 2 common forms of DMD are –

Laser
Measures a straight line from point A to point B Gives distances from A to B, even on blind shots
Requires clear line of sight to the target (flag)

GPS
Measures only to front, middle and back of green, not flag
Requires a steady hand, even in windy conditions Courses may need to be downloaded from pc in advance

You are permitted to –
Measure straight line distance between two points;
Access a club yardage chart based off historical information;
Enter your hole scores;
Enter shot information – for later analysis (e.g. club used and location);Access a local weather forecast.

You are not permitted to –
Gauge or measure slope
Gauge or measure other conditions that might affect play (e.g., wind speed or direction);
Access recommendations that might assist the player in making a stroke or in his play (e.g. club selection, type of shot to be played, green reading or other advice related matters)
Calculate effective distance based on elevation changes or other conditions affecting shot distance.
